Next it was Rieti's turn for Rudisha to break the World Record he'd set in Berlin the Sunday before and get ever closer to that legendary 100 second mark. I wonder if those Euro background beats made him up his tempo even further...

...with Rudisha (yes I know an update every other month is particularly slow) and neither can the rest of the world as he broke the World Record twice in August. First in Berlin - you'd think the German commentator could raise a little bit more passion for a 13 year old World Record being broken...

David Rudisha closed 2009 with something special at Rieti which put him behind only Wilson Kipketer, Sebastian Coe and Joaquim Cruz on the all-time performers’ list and he started 2010 in the same great form.

The IAAF World Challenge 2010 kicked of at the Melbourne Track Classic last Thursday, and he produced something special again. His prediction of 1:43 wasn't just talk as he ran 1:43.15.

He also promised there was more to come, specifically, into the territory now occupied only by Messrs Kipketer, Coe and Cruz. Only Coe is officially a Lord, but these men are the aristocracy of the 800.Rudisha needs only to find another 0.02 to join the club. “That is what I’m expecting,” he said after his race, “I want to run my personal best.”

The ease with which Rudisha tracked fellow-Kenyan Sammy Tangui through a first lap of precisely 50.00 suggests that a 1:41 is somewhere in the near future. For the moment, Rudisha picked up the Australian all-comers’ record, his time taking 0.82 from the mark set by David Lelei at this meeting in 2000. I'm off to the bookies now...

More good news in that our article in House attracted the attention of the senior foreign correspondent for ABC News. We'll be hooking up with him next week to talk about a possible "Nightline" slot on the channel.

Oh and Eddie (that's co-director Ed Sunderland) went for a run the other morning - emulating our friends Augustine, Isaac, David, and Mangata (rather slower obviously). In fact I was meant to go with him, but he left before me!! Teamwork, what teamwork?

Rudisha runs fastest in 2009 and fourth fastest ever

David Rudisha has every chance of becoming the greatest 800m runner of all time.

A tall young man from the Masaai tribe, unusual as Kenyan running is dominated by Kalenjins, he in fact comes from a family with a pedigree. His father, Daniel Rudisha, won a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in the 4 x 400m relay. David runs to make them proud. When he runs his father says he still feels represented

We, and Colm, first met him at the training camp in 2005 aged 16 and we filmed him here running his first 800m race. He is a quiet character, sensitive off the track, but put him on it and he is huge, intimidating presence and currently Steve Cram’s tip to be the best ever.

Here he is at the age of just 20 running the fourth fastest 800m of all time, breaking the African record (The former Kenyan but now Danish Wilson Kipketer holds the World Record at 1:41:11) and clocking the quickest time for 2009 - it's just shame more people didn't turn up to see it...
